Position:  Scientist, Tissue Culture Production Facility (Portland, Oregon) 

Reports to:  Science Lead 

Position purpose:  This position owns the propagation and protocol optimization of specific crops to ensure delivery of high quality plantlets to the Greenhouse and ultimately our customers by working in a team setting to develop new protocols, and the continuous improvement of existing protocols and procedures 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Conduct activities that require specialized knowledge and the broad application of tissue culture, micro-propagation and initiation techniques  
  • Plan, design, coordinate and implement experiments and research plans for specific crops or projects 
  • Use in-depth knowledge of tissue culture media formulations and micro-propagation techniques for the continuous discovery and development of technologies, procedures, and products 
  • Develop work plans and drive execution by mentoring staff and monitoring project progress 
  • Contribute to the production pipeline with hands-on laboratory work 
  • Take initiative in keeping current with literature in areas of assignment 
  • Assume supervisory responsibility as needed


  • PhD in plant biology, cell biology, plant physiology, horticulture or related field and/or at least 10 years of progressive responsibilities in plant tissue culture or micro-propagation 
  • Ability to solve problems through deductive reasoning and the application of scientific principles 
  • Capable of design and interpretation of scientific experiments 
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain project notes and compile and present reports
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team  
  • Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Ability to focus on meeting the needs of internal customers 
  • Willingness and capacity to learn and acquire relevant new skill sets
